Shakespeare BASH'd began with staged readings. They have been a part of our history, allowing us to explore the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries starting from the text. Staged readings have challenged us to make the play come alive with a complete focus on the words telling the story. Shakespeare BASH'd has come to cherish the opportunity to look at the play from such a focused and simple perspective.
This time around we are presenting The Changeling by Thomas Middleton & William Rowley, a quintessential Jacobean tragedy that is chilling, sexy, and maniacally funny. The play is about Beatrice-Joanna, and her desire to marry a man other than her betrothed. She enlists the help of De Flores, a hideous servant in her father's household, whom she detests, to kill her finance Alonzo de Piracquo. De Flores agrees but in return he wants Beatrice-Joanna's virginity.
The Changeling is fascinating in its exploration of lust, devotion, madness and the consequences of our desires and we’re thrilled to bring it to life with this extraordinary team.
