Company Interviews: Jade Douris as Celia
We asked Jade Douris, who plays Celia in our production of As You Like It, a few questions about herself, the production, and music...
Have you been in a production of As You Like It before?
Yes! At Shakespeare by the Sea in Halifax...BASH’d Artistic Associate Catherine Rainville was a beautiful Rosalind in that production, and Hilary Adams, one of our composers, was her lovely Celia. They were wonderful! I’m definitely stealing so much from them in this production. I played Audrey! Drew (the director) went a slightly different direction for Audrey in this production...I am not as handsome as Jonny.
If your character were at Junction City Music Hall, what drink would they order?
Well, my interpretation of Celia is that she is around 16 years old...so when her father, Duke Frederick, is looking: a ginger ale, but she’d swap it out for a sparkling wine as soon as she could get away with it.
Did you ever write love poetry? Tell us about it!
No, but I’ve had love poems written for me!!! I won’t embarrass the poet by revealing his identity, because he wants to be taken seriously as the director of this play.
What is your favourite 1960's love song?
Don’t Rain On My Parade, from Funny Girl.
What have you done with Shakespeare BASH'd before?
This is #5 for me, but the first one directed by my fiancé, Drew O’Hara. We’ve worked together a lot, so we have a real shorthand, and I trust him completely to tell me when I’m doing too much, so I feel really free to play around with bold choices.
If you could see one band/musician at any time in the past, present, or future, who would that be?
It’s a boring thing to say, but I of course would love to go back in time to see the Beatles live...my other one, you’ll judge me for: but I would also love to see Britney at the 2001 VMAs. She WORE a SNAKE.
What are you most excited for people to see in this production?
Lesley Robertson was born to play Touchstone. That’s all I’ll say, because you should get to be as surprised as I am, daily, in rehearsal!
