Company Interviews: Julia Nish-Lapidus as Maria
We asked Julia Nish-Lapidus, who plays Maria in our production of Twelfth Night, a few questions about herself, the play, and her taste in beer...

What is your favourite scene or line in Twelfth Night?
Most of my favourite lines are Sir Andrew Aguecheek. I love "I am a fellow o' the strangest mind i' the world."
Have you ever written or received a love letter?
I think I spent a good portion of my adolescence sending and receiving love letters. And that's as much as I'll say about that.
This production is set in the 1920s in Paris. What is your favourite thing about that era?
Music! I've always loved the music of that period and this has been a great excuse to listen to more of it. So much Josephine Baker. I love her voice.
What might an audience member be interested to know about your take on your character?
Maria is a really interesting character to dig into. She's smart, strong, and witty. She's got lots of sass, but she's also very much in love. It's a fun combination of things to play and I'm enjoying figuring out the balance between the prankster and the woman who sometimes just needs people to follow the rules.
What are you going to drink to celebrate opening night at the Monarch Tavern?
Beer! The Monarch always has a good brown ale on tap. I'm a big fan of that.
