Cast Interview: Megan Miles as Rosencrantz
We asked Megan Miles, who plays Rosencrantz in our production of Hamlet, a few questions about herself, the play, Shakespeare, and the city of Toronto...
What is your favourite Shakespeare play?
It's a tie for my favorite Shakespeare play. I love A Midsummer Night's Dream because it was my first encounter with Shakespeare. It's fluffy and I love it. I also love Titus Andronicus. I don't question why - I just do. I will answer no more questions on the subject.
What’s your favourite line in Hamlet?
"To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man."
If your character were at The Monarch Tavern, what drink would they order?
Rosencrantz would have a craft beer because she loves it, but also so that she can feel like one of the boys. Likely a Muddy York Diving Horse IPA. But she'd also splurge on good scotch while, in the same night, forcing a round of jäger bombs on everyone - NO EXCEPTIONS.
What might people be interested to know about your take on your character?
Jade already touched on this, but it has been so incredible mining the relationship that Rosencrantz has with her friends, especially with Guildenstern. They by no means agree on things or the way they go about it, but they trust each other completely. They are a perfect duo. Very much a good cop/bad cop situation. And I couldn't have imagined a better bad cop by my side than Jade. She's a beast of an actor and I am so lucky to get to muck around with her. Tip: watch her reactions to things if you're with her (best option is a puppy video) - best face ever.
What’s the biggest challenge in taking on this role?
Trying to understand exactly when and why Rosencrantz and Guildenstern turn on Hamlet. It always seemed trivial to me; that it had to be something more than power and social advancement. The text gives very little in way of motive for R&G to abandon their friendship with Hamlet in favor of Claudius. Trying to find the exact reason and motive for the betrayal has been a fun challenge.
What’s your favourite junk food?
Miss Vickie's Lime and Black Pepper Chips. I'd eat 3 bags a day if I was allowed or could FIND THEM anywhere in this city.
What’s your Starbucks order?
PSL to splurge. Daily: Grande Pike in a Venti Cup - I need room for all the milk.
What’s your favourite place in Toronto?
Cedarvale Ravine/Beltline Trail. I can go there and forget I'm in a big city for a while. And Dutch Dreams - ice cream heaven.
