Cast Interviews: Jade Douris as Guildenstern
We asked Jade Douris, who plays Guildenstern in our production of Hamlet, a few questions about herself, the play, Shakespeare, and the city of Toronto...
What neighbourhood of the city do you live in, and in your opinion, what’s the best coffee shop or bar in your neighbourhood?
Little Italy. For coffee, you go to Manic Coffee, for drinks, The Monarch Tavern, of course!
What is your favourite Shakespeare play?
Romeo & Juliet
If your character were at The Monarch Tavern, what drink would they order?
Shots for everyone!
What might people be interested to know about your take on your character?
Figuring out Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and their relationship with each other and with Hamlet has been very interesting. I think a lot of people think of them as this hilariously interchangeable little dynamic duo. I wasn’t expecting to find all the differences between them that we have…their subtle disagreements, the way they work different tactics from each other to try to figure out what’s going on with Hamlet, and later, how to deal with what he does. And Megan Miles is such a great partner in crime…we get to just try lots of stuff in rehearsal and see what sticks.
Have you ever been in Hamlet before? Where? Who did you play that time?
Yes, a filmed version for an iPhone app called Shakespeare at Play, and I played Ophelia. You can watch me on your cell phoooooone.
What’s your Starbucks order?
Half sweet vanilla latte when it’s cold outside, but in summer…you order a Very Berry Hibiscus Refresher, and ask them to make it with Black Tea instead of water. But make sure you still get the blackberries. It is the best. You are welcome.
What’s your favourite place in Toronto?
The Toronto Fringe Tent. It’s the best party in the city. Ooh, or Trinity Bellwoods in the summer because dogs. All the dogs.
