Company Interviews: Kelly Wong as Hastings and Tyrrel
We asked Kelly Wong, who plays Hastings, Tyrrel, and more in our production of Richard III, a few questions about himself, the show, and his neighbourhood...

How many characters do you play in Richard III?
Two! And a half. Maybe two and three quarters? Of them, I’m pretty fond of Hastings. He sees the best in his friends, gives the benefit of the doubt and rocks a mean cardigan. Also, I get my haircut at Hastings Barbershop. Unrelated.
What neighbourhood of Toronto do you live in?
Woodbine Heights! Upper Beaches. East York? East Danforth… The Danny? There are too many names for the same place. Regardless, it’s a kick ass part of town. It has the perfect mix of being neighbourhood-y while still feeling like it’s part of the city. There are a ton of great restaurants (The Wren! What? Local 1794! What what?), green spaces (the Don Valley is just down the block) and people (we know our neighbours by name!).
William and Kate or Harry and Meghan?
Justin and Selena.
Coffee or Tea?
You don’t want to be around me if I haven’t had my morning coffee. Just call me Garfield.
Richard chooses to keep his real name when he becomes king (typical). Pick your Regnal name!
Garfield?
Have you been in a Shakespeare BASH’d play before, or is this your first one?
This is my first Bashing and I’m having a great time! Julia and James have assembled a wonderful group of actors to play with. It’s been fun to watch everyone sink deep into their roles. And I love that I finally get the chance to work with my wife. And that our dog is encouraged to come to rehearsals. And that I get to wear my new glasses in a play. Wait, what was the question? Ummm, I guess I was surprised at how tall Trevor is.
